TIRED OF YOUR OLD WIGS? REVAMP IT WITH THESE SIMPLE STEPS.
Wigs are one of the most important and valued accessories of a woman. It is a must-have for all ladies, and an easy way to switch hairstyles, and also wigs are rescue accessorie, wIenever you are having “a bad hair day”.
Wigs are accessories women cannot go without, yet their maintenance is quite difficult. And judging from their high cost, wigs are not something that should be disposed off just anyhow.
Wigs that have lost their beauty and glories can still be restored, they can be treated to put them back to use.
The process of treating wigs to restore them to their factory look (maybe not completely), is called Revamping.
Wigs wear out just like clothes do, but unlike clothes you don’t throw them away, you just revamp them.
Revamping wigs require some materials such as a plastic bag, mild shampoo, warm water, conditioner, hair mayonnaise, leave-in conditioner, a small bucket, hairbrush, and a wide-toothed comb.
Steps to an easy DIY on wig revamping
Detangle: Before you do any other thing, use your fingers to detangle your wig to untie knots in the hair. When you are sure that all knots have been untied, proceed to comb your wig using the wide-toothed comb to achieve a tangle-free wig.
While combing the hair, ensure to start from the tip of the wig and then move to the top, so as not to damage the wig.
If you find it difficult to move the comb freely through the wig, apply a little conditioner to make it easier for you.
Wash with a mild shampoo. Get a bucket containing warm water (warm water suits all wig types and it easily removes hair oil and grease you have used on the wig).
Add shampoo to the water, dip the wig completely into the water and wash gently. Wash every part of the wig- the weft, wig cap, and weave-on.
Do not be hard on the wig to avoid breaking many hairs. If after washing it, you feel like the wig is still dirty, wash It again.
Apply a conditioner and rinse off thoroughly.
Leave-in conditioner/ hair mayonnaise: the two materials are for different wigs. If the wig you are revamping is a straight wig or a wavy wig, apply a styling hair mayonnaise. But if it is a curly wig, use a leave-in conditioner.
Anyone it is, apply a good quantity on the hair thoroughly and allow it to stay for some time, usually a whole day.
Steaming: after conditioning or applying the hair mayonnaise, put the hair in a plastic bag (the hair still contains the conditioner or mayonnaise). Then place the plastic bag in a hair steamer or microwave, but if you don’t have any, you can just leave it in the plastic bag.
The difference is that, in the plastic bag alone, it takes time for the wig to, like about 20-30 minutes, whereas in the steamer or microwave, it is faster, it takes lesser time about 30 – 45 seconds.
After steaming the hair, remove it from the hair steamer and allow it to rest for about 1hour to cool down.
Drying: when the wig has cooled down, gently squeeze out excess moisture from the hair and allow the hair to dry naturally.
Do not blow-dry, the heat might ruin the wig. But If you need the wig urgently, you can blow dry but with very low heat.
Brush or Comb the wig. When the wig is thoroughly dried, apply any hair cream or serum of your choice, and then comb the wig with a wide-toothed comb or vent brush.
Style your wig into any pattern of your choice, you can also curl it if you want to, using your rollers.
To take care of your wigs;
Wash with mild shampoo and conditioner whenever they are actively in use, at least once a week.
Do not fold your wigs, hang them on a wig stand or dummy head. You can also fix a nail on the wall and hang them there, to keep your wigs smooth and tangle-free.
Straighten your wig with a flat iron (for straight wigs), if you don’t have a straightener.
Do not over-dye your wigs.
When you want to put on your curly wigs, sprinkle water on them and apply leave-in conditioner, then comb.
These easy steps will help you revive your old wigs, give it a try.
